I'd be incredibly surprised if 'God' suddenly made 'His' existence known, as it would prove that I had been mistaken in my lack of belief... so... yeah... I'd 'shit bricks' (metaphorically speaking). What I would not do is go into a state of denial with my fingers in my ears while chanting "Lalalala!", like a lot of theists do when confronted by scientific facts that oppose their beliefs. Unlike them, I would face facts and alter my beliefs.

Since my last post, I'd thought about the end of Star Trek V.

It was a horrible movie but it did have an interesting point at the end. If "God" were to appear, how would we know it was really God and not just a powerful alien trying to get aboard our star ship?

Star Trek TNG again explored the idea in an episode where "the devil" made an appearance. It turned out she was just a con artist with some high tech flair.

If God were to appear, all we could really be sure of is that a powerful being of some sort has contacted us claiming to be "God". To quote McCoy from that horrid movie, there's no identification badge you can ask for.

Also, you can be sure that if the being introducing itself as "God" would not be accepted by any theist of another religion. If Yahweh-Jesus came down, Muslims would say it was a trick by the devil. If Allah came down, Christians would say it was a trick by the devil. If Nature's God came down and told us all to reject all this nonsense, both Christians and Muslims would say it was a trick by the devil. Any theist would reject any god that doesn't conform to their expectations.

So I guess this is a good question for the theists to answer as well. What if you met "God" and this being told you that you've been following the wrong religion.

Yeah I'd definitely be suspicious. Even any "miracles" to prove its' divinity by this entity could just be an advanced alien trying to control us with our superstitions. Obviously I would believe that the entity existed, I just wouldn't necessarily believe its' claim about being god, whichever one that happened to be. I would be afraid though, since this being is powerful and since it's claiming to be a god (or all gods?) it obviously plans on controlling us one way or another.

I would start preparing a list of questions to ask him, her or it.

1. Why didn't you just make it more obvious instead of sending braying donkeys to "prove" you're real?

2. Please explain the situation in Africa to me and I don't want to hear any excuses, asshole.

3. Genocides? You must take really long vacations, right? Be honest if you just don't give a shit. Either way, you're an asshole.

Etc.

I would certainly be surprised. That many crazy people being right has got to be a record of some sort. I don't think I would "shit bricks." It be more like, "I didn't see that coming." or "Oh, a new species. We should look for more specimens."
