Perhaps.

But I've also heard It said, include by notable Nobel prize winning physicists, that Hawking's actual contribution to advancing the state of physics nowhere near justify his outsized fame as physicist amongst general public, and he would be remembered more as a personality than as a physicist.

He was such an inspirational person, showing just how much you can make of life even in very difficult circumstances. Also an embodiment of the power of science. Sad to lose him.

Maybe just as well he died now before he lost what little means of communication he had left to him rather than being a prisoner in his own mind.

A great loss.
It's amazing 'science' always seems to 'find' whatever it is funded for, and never the oppsite. Drich.
