What were your first questions?

RE: What were your first questions?
Why did god make me this way, knowing that I'll never be good enough to go to heaven?

RE: What were your first questions?
Regarding Christianity, I guess my first questions weren't asked until much later in life. I don't think i really started questioning anything until I delved deeper into religion.

My first question was: What the fuck is wrong with people? People don't put nearly as much effort into taking care of the poor as they do hating on gay people.

It wasn't until I came to this forum that I started asking questions proper. Though my daughter's question to me nailed everything:

"If there is a creator of some sort, why call it god?"

Which is why I'm not longer a deist, but a Somethingist. I think there might be something out there, but I don't have the first fucking clue what it might be.
"Tradition" is just a word people use to make themselves feel better about being an asshole.

As I've said in a bunch of other threads about our personal histories, I was kind of just super bland lapsed Catholic by association for most of my young adult and adult life, and never really questioned much of it. It wasn't hammered into me much after I turned 8 or so, I just thought it was the default to believe in God and Jesus and the Bible. My first question was really when I was confronted in college by some people who were totally unafraid to say they didn't believe any of it, and I simply asked myself, "Wait...why do I believe this stuff?"

RE: What were your first questions?
No questions led me to my atheism. I was a deist as a small child so that's the only type of theism I've been a part of. And the only reason I postulated a deity at all in the first place was to explain the beauty of nature and the variety of animals and plants before I was 10 years old. When I was 10 years old my dad showed me a TV documentary about evolution, and then proceeded to educate me further about evolution. Suddenly I didn't even need a deity to explain nature. And the only reason I wasn't happy with no explanation and thus felt the need to invoke god is because I've always been insatiably curious and needed explanations.

But I have never needed the curiosity to question any religion, because it was fucking obvious as fuck to me even as a small child that the stories of the Bible and similar books were just stories. I was shocked years later as a young adult to discover that adults genuinely believed in that stuff literally, when I always assumed it was just stories and similar to the Aesop's fables my dad used to read me as a child.

Same, I couldn't have explained any better myself, and it's exactly how I was as a small child.

Although only being a small child I did need my lack of belief confirming by someone with authority, so I asked my mother one question - is god real?

She said no she didn't think so.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

I could no longer ignore the contradictions of believing in God and a religion. I decided that I NEEDED answers. And that lead me to atheism.

RE: What were your first questions?
"What makes Catholicism right and Protestantism wrong?"
"What makes Christianity right and Islam wrong?"
"What makes any religion right and atheism wrong?"
"Oh."

I believe I was 16 when I had this line of logic.
