Did they have adult heart worms? Your dogs may not have been at the same stage or had the same worm load.

The injections are into a large muscle in the back, hence the shaving with long hair (these dogs get shaved even for a blood draw). She was touch and go for a long while. If I recall correctly she was on cage rest for 4 months. But then she had other co-morbid issues.

The injection can cause bad reactions, and it's a way for the veterinarian to monitor the injection site on a very hairy dog.
Heartworm treatment is no joke.

Every one we have had did have the adult worms.  We only had one who did not have microfilaria as well.  And yeah they get the shot routine but the vets do not shave them and Golden are quite fuzzy.

We've also never had a dog with a negative reaction to the shots.

"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Don't know what to tell you Min. Most everything I've read or heard states that the injection site(s) should be shaved/visable. Treated dogs are at risk for sterile abscess at the injection site.

Maybe ask your vet why they don't shave.
