Trump administration backs Asian-American students in Harvard admissions lawsuit

RE: Trump administration backs Asian-American students in Harvard admissions lawsuit
I always figured colleges gave scholarships specifically to minorities as more of a business tactic than anything. Diversify the student body.

Nope!!!

Doesn't depend on anything. If you're a woman, you are under privileged! If you are an immigrant, you are under priviledged! Smile

(Actually I agree with you. That's kind of my whole point)

Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

That's a strawman . Pointing out general exceptions to a rule does not mean the general fact that woman and immigrants get stepped on in employment education etc . Because they are.

Personally I think giving some points to certain groups makes sense.

However, I've never heard of taking points away  from certain high-achieving groups. That does indeed suck. I suppose in some circumstances it gets the same results, but it really rubs me the wrong way.

How is giving you points fundamentally different from taking points away from your competitor?

The more fundamental solution seem to be to expand educational opportunity rather than forceably ration educational opportunity.

In California, the Great governor Reagan put in place an entire fiscal framework back by short term interests of the state's property owners designed to ensure the state's academically and research wise world-beating public University system, long thought to be hostile to the know-nothing agenda of the post Goldwater Republicans, will be permanently underfunded.

The University of California system, faced with little state financial support but state mandate to offer education to the state's residents for much below cost, did the expected thing.   It preferentially admitted foreign student, particularly those from Asia, who paid the full tuition to cover the cost of educating them, over in-state student each of whom is a unreimbursed financial burden for the university.

Affirmative action should be done in a fair way.

For example, if you are handling university admissions, then you should give places to the students with the highest scores first, regardless of their race / ethnicity. In fact, you shouldn't even be looking at their race / ethnicity in admissions.

After you've given students placements based on their ability, and you have places left over, take a set of the next best students. Look at the overall race/ethnicity distribution of *all* the applying students, compare them to the race/ethnicity distribution of the students you've just given placements to, and give placements to the next best students in a way which results in a race/ethnicity distribution that most closely matches that of all applying students.

It would be all gravy if all high schools in America gave students the same opportunities. If not for affirmative action, many kids that have decent grades but lower standardized test scores would never have a chance at getting admission to these schools. It's not because they didn't study hard enough, and it's not because they didn't try hard enough. They literally are going to school in inner city Chicago and have to take care of their three siblings because their parents work two shifts, not to mention deal with gang violence where they live.

Those people deserve not to be measured directly against a kid like me who grew up in Altamonte Springs, Fl, and went to a high school that paid for AP exams and was focused on college prep.

Having a more racially diverse student body is good for colleges and their students. They may need to adjust their admissions process, but in general, giving people opportunities should take into account their background and the level of opportunity they have had available to them. Deserving to be admitted to a college is not all about test scores and GPA.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Assuming you mean test scores, sometimes highest score is not the only deciding factor. They'll often give a higher admission ranking to a lower test score but more involved student over a total book worm.

I don't know who that is. But if someone took a spot from another person who had a higher performance just because of who their dad is, that's just as dumb.
