The U.S. stands almost entirely alone among developed nations that lack universal health care.

I guess they're trying to prove to the public that Medicare-for-all can work without forcing anything. Thing is though, most of America already wants it. But if something like this can pass in the future, I'm all for it. But I kind of also wonder if it's mostly just posturing because they know it can't go through. Obviously, the Trumpster Fire is going to veto anything like that even if we get a majority in Congress.

I guess he could have said, "The industrialized world." or "First World Countries."

Well the industrialized world wouldn't be accurate either.

It drives me crazy when people say "the whole world but the USA....." and then leave out most of the world.
In a way, I get what you're saying , But I think the larger point that we are the richest country, yet the only one in the first world that doesn't give everyone health care. (although some countries kind of deny that they do while doing so) is a pretty convincing one.

It's not that and with the rapid deregulation and the money being thrown at the military industrial complex with the failing infrastructure and not to mention the NAFTA renegotiations to give public infrastructure over to large banks... and the tax reform and banking deregulation and the stagnate wage growth in this country.... were only relevant on the world stage because we have the best damn fight force money can buy. And yet all the money being wasted and the economy with it's fake growth is going to crash the economy again... and with bills and democrats being as worthless trash as they are they are working with republicans on bills that for the american taxpayers to bail out the same people that will crash the economy again... we have all this money we can save money by giving people insurance and what's left over can go into the military budget or better yet giving that money to homeless veterans we magically have forgotten about. simply put where a nation led by people who people who left is in a proverbial hot car and left to die that's where we are now. We have been led by leaders who simply played on our emotions and ignorance and it's true for both sides democrat and republican it's just democrats know how to put on a good show.

I feel you. Really we didn't need any "stimulus".

Meanwhile the Democrats know they won't get this passed anytime soon, but they are at least working on solutions to problems that they can hopefully enact later.

But in all fairness the Republicans were voting for a straight repeal many times when they weren't in power. So it's easy as a minority party to propose legislation or repeal because you don't have to deal with the actual consequences. If the Dems come to power, and you think what they pass will resemble this, then I have a swamp in florida to sell you.

Thats not almost alone, and some of those countries, you would not want to go to the public hospitals. Anyone with money goes to private hospitals. I know, I've been there. Again, you just compared it to the "developed world" which is exactly what I said, mostly countries that spent centuries plundering the rest of the world.

Btw, I'm in favor of universal healthcare. I want it for me. But I HATE the 'developed world' argument. It's a meaningless list of cherrypicked countries.

You know privately owned hospitals accept the public insurance, right? Whether the hospital itself is private generally does not matter (in terms of coverage. I'd agree that private institutions are almost always superior in quality to public ones.) 80% of Japan's hospitals are private but are not-for-profit and accept government insurance. Then again, the government sets the prices there anyway.

I don't think that's the case in all the countries min put on the list. I know it's not the case for Venezuela, as one of my best friends grew up there and said public hospitals were basically garbage.

But my original point is more about the obnoxious habit of people saying "every country but America....." It's always followed by an untrue statement.

Yeah. It is easy to oversimplify things when discussing something as complex as health systems. Look at the amount of people who use the term "universal health care" as a blanket statement for all countries who do it, despite the wide variety in times of universal health care systems.
