Why is the suffering of one species less important than another if the capacity to suffer is the same? What next? At least it wasn't a white straight man that had drugs cut out of them?

Yes, it's my privilege to not have drugs cut out of me.
But if a person finds it hard to choose between puppies and people, that would seem to me to be a little psychopathic.
I don't actually believe that anyone in this thread would really want to see the man killed for his actions and I completely understand the outrage.

It could be argued that only being able to empathise with the suffering of animals the same species as you is a greater sign of psychopathy.

After all, it only takes a little move further along the spectrum to be making the same arbitrary distinction between different kinds of people by seeing them as subhuman. Unless that is you have evidence that puppies have less capacity to suffer than people which I am sure that you don't.

Well it's lucky that's not what's being argued because I never mentioned only being able to empathise with the same species, only to prioritise.
As I said, I understand the outrage but I haven't seen a thread where people are calling for capital punishment for drug runners who create human drug mules, who sometimes die of overdose.
What's more, from having worked with the disabled for only a short time now, I can tell you that vast numbers of people make the arbitrary distinction between different kinds of people by seeing them as subhuman and I'm sure they wouldn't all qualify as psychopaths.
And neither would people who eat meat.
And I love dogs and cats even more.
That guy certainly deserves jail time.
And I hope this doesn't turn into an argument because I like you Matilda and I wouldn't want that. :-)
