As for consciousness and emotion being "switched off" with chemicals and injuries, that means nothing. The theory is that the brain is a receiver of our consciousness. If the brain is drugged or damaged, then it cannot receive our consciousness correctly. All they can see in MRI's and PET scans  is the parts of the brain that are being used when we are experiencing emotions and consciousness, not how the emotions and consciousness are happening.
