‘Are You Actually an M.D.?’: A Black Doctor Is Questioned as She Intervenes on a Delta Flight

Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford was on a Delta flight from Indianapolis to Boston on Tuesday when she noticed the woman next to her showing signs of distress. So Dr. Stanford did what she was trained to do in more than a decade of experience as a doctor — she began to assist her.

But Dr. Stanford, who is black, said she had just started to help the passenger when a flight attendant approached and asked if she was a doctor. Dr. Stanford said yes and, without being asked, she took out her medical license, which says she is a physician registered in Massachusetts and has the letters “M.D.” after her name.

“I know I don’t look the part,” Dr. Stanford, 39, said in an interview on Thursday. “So I just carry it with my driver’s license at all times.”

The flight attendant glanced at it and walked away, she said. As Dr. Stanford continued to try to calm the passenger, another flight attendant approached and asked to see the license. She, too, looked at it and walked away. Then the two flight attendants returned together and began another series of questions.

“Are you a head doctor?” one of them asked. When Dr. Stanford said she did not understand the question, the flight attendant asked, “Are you actually an M.D.?”

I meant what I said. I like how the word "puctured" feels in the mouth when I say it. It is too good a word not to be a thing. So what could it be?

Walking back from town just now along the pavement, I rounded a corner and was nearly struck by a cyclist who was riding on the pavement also. I laughed and hi-fived him, he laughed too, I said: "that was close, no worries bruv."

A gentleman wearing muslim garb, who witnessed the event, spoke to me as I passed, after the cyclist had ridden away. "He's a fucking idiot, riding on the pavement, and you just let him get away with it!" "He's like 16 or 17...but no, you're right, I should have said something....I was just so pleased I hadn't been hit! If It happens again I'll say something." "You should." he replied.

I used to cycle on the pavement as a kid and perhaps that's why I let him off the hook. Just as likely, however, in my mind, is that I was being racist, "positive discrimination" type. The cyclist was black and I am white.

She was ‘white and hot’ in a racist rant. Now #SouthParkSusan is charged with misusing 911.

Her name is Susan Westwood.

But her racist confrontation with two black women that led to her viral moment and eventual arrest earned her a nickname that stuck: #SouthParkSusan.

Westwood, 51, has joined the pantheon of white people accosting people of color and calling police about trivial or nonexistent concerns.

In this case, it involved a black woman from Westwood’s exclusive Charlotte community and the woman’s sister, who were waiting at night for AAA assistance to help with a car that wouldn’t start Oct. 19.

Westwood’s racist and apparent booze-fueled tirade — in which she ranted that Mary and Leisa Garris did not belong there, and that she was “white and hot” — was captured on video by the sisters and exploded across social media. Westwood referenced owning a gun and accused the sisters, among other things, of selling drugs.

The incident led Spectrum Communication to fire Westwood.

But it was her 911 call after the confrontation that led police to issue a misdemeanor warrant for misusing emergency services. Westwood “contacted 911 to falsely claim that individuals near her residence were attempting to break into nearby residences,” the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.

Westwood surrendered to police Saturday — three days after the warrant was issued — and was taken to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Department. She was released on $500 bond, the department said, and has a hearing scheduled for Dec. 19, according to court records.
