Too bad believers cannot see how ridiculous they appear.

When you think about it, it's hard to believe that anyone buys into this.

2000 years ago, God was born on earth. He was immortal, and today we chant over a glass of wine and some crackers. Magically, they become his body and blood, and by cannibalizing him, we can steal some of his immortality. Give me a break!! Does this really sound any better than the other religions, the ones that Christians make fun of?

My favorite book of the Bible is Genesis.

'God created Adam and Eve. They had two sons, Cain and Able. One of the sons gets married ' . . . to whom???

If not for the inconsistencies (do unto others, turn the other cheek, an eye for an eye, etc) it would make a pretty fair comedy.

It's not a bad summary, I got all the important plot points in there.

Oh, you know that video is making fun of YECs right?

Well then I am afraid that shows your limited understanding of Christian Theology. I would encourage you to get some of the greatest works on the subject.

You're making stupid assumptions here, I've read plenty of books on your fairy tales and the fairy tales themselves. I prefer Mother Goose to be honest.

What specifically was your problem with my summary?

Quote:Nope, it's actually making fun of Atheists. Both of the two episodes were. It was Parker and Stone's response to Penn Jillette's criticism of them for believing in a "higher power". So they made a two part episode to show how stupid they think Atheism is, which Parker even says is the "silliest of all the religions." So nice try Void. Probably one reason Dawkins is portrayed as such a moron in the episodes.

I've seen the episode mate, I know they make fun of Dawkins, but they're pro evolution. There is a clip of Stone talking about that part of the show, it was him trying to state what sort of shit creationists believe about evolution. They might be believers but they still believe in common ancestry.

Besides, they portrayed Dawkins just like every other single person that they don't like, what's so special about this case? Nothing.

1st Tim 2:4 (God) will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

1st Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Quote:Saying that is what Christianity is about is like saying this is what evolution is all about. Total strawman and you should know better.

How about this summary:

Christianity is the belief that God sent himself down to earth to be his own son so that he might be able to sacrifice himself to himself because bleeding on a cross was the only way that he could convince himself to forgive us for the fact that we are his flawed sinful creations due to the fact that an ancestor of ours who was made from a rib ate a magic fruit after speaking with a talking snake.

...oh, and love is evil when the body parts are similar.

Exactly, and two Christian friends of mine had the nerve to laugh about Mohammad ascending to heaven on a winged horse-as if that's any less ridiculous then Jesus ascending to heaven on a cloud! It's not, IMO!

@Statler Waldorf-I have read the Holiness of God, and other books by R.C. Sproul. But I am not convinced that there is a God or that he would send Muslims to hell for just having grown up in the "wrong" religion. I mean, that is what you believe, is it not? That these people, if they don't change from being Muslims, are going to suffer eternal torture? Because that's pretty disturbing to me.

Right!

Too often, one's religion is an excuse to feel superior, in my opinion.

RE: I went back to church, but I just DON'T believe...
Lots of posts here about why not to believe. You'd think that would be fairly established on an atheists forum. Barely anyone here believes and seems to take heart in the tool of discreditation (not a word btw).

Just NOT believing something never takes you where you want to go. It never gives answers outside of the realm of those that do believe. Doing so only ties you into those that DO believe. And as we all can agree...this realm gets you nowhere.

I have yet to see an atheist here promulgate something they do believe in.

As to why I went back, I was raised by my parents (and this is by no means a slam on them) to be dependent. So, when I had a horrible day at work, I felt like that was "god" calling me back to himself. I REALLY need to break this emotional dependence on a non-existent deity, but I honestly don't know how. Any resources would help.

Guy P. Harrison's book about why people believe in a god helps, and I'm off to buy a copy of Atheist Universe, by Mills. I read the intro that he wrote on Amazon.com, and am VERY impressed!Smile
1) DON'T force yourself to believe anything
2) Invest in talking to friends, they can really help after a bad day.
3) Remember, just because there is no God doesn't mean the universe isn't amazing. I suggest looking at some stellar/cosmological imagery, it always cheers me up.

And after reading your post, neither have I.
