Gene linked to infidelity/cheating found
Thrill-Seeking Gene Can Lead to More Sex Partners
SUNY Scientists Find Longer DRD4 Gene Can Lead to Double Risk for Promiscuity, Infidelity
By SUSAN DONALDSON JAMES
Dec. 6, 2010

John Coleman, a 22-year-old from Syracuse, N.Y., has been engaged for the last two years and cannot fathom having sex with anyone other than his girlfriend. "I find cheating appalling," said Coleman. "There's got to be something going on in your head to cheat." It turns out Coleman is right.

In what is being called a first of its kind study, researchers at Binghamton University, State University of New York (SUNY) have discovered that about half of all people have a gene that makes them more vulnerable to promiscuity and cheating. [/quote]Those with a certain variant of the dopamine receptor D4 polymorphism -- or DRD4 gene -- "were more likely to have a history of uncommitted sex, including one-night stands and acts of infidelity," according to lead investigator Justin Garcia.

DRD4 is the "thrill-seeking" gene, also responsible for alcohol and gambling addictions. The gene can influence the brain's chemistry and subsequently, an individual's behavior.

The desire to cheat or sleep around seems to originate in the brain's pleasure and reward center, where the "rush" of dopamine motivates those who are vulnerable, the researchers say.

I hate these "Gene linked to X" found stories.

Biology isn't that fucking simple.

I would have been disappointed in my genes if it didn't help me cheat.

It ain't my fault baby, it's just the way I am.

Exactly, I'm reading the article to see if that is anything like what is actually said.

*Edit* This does seem to have a correlation.

181 people were questioned on their sexual behaviour, they also took a swab and genotyped the DRD4 VNTR gene. People with a specific allele had a +50% chance of cheating.

Regardless of the accuracy or significance of this discovery, I hope it - or any discovery about genetics - doesn't lead anyone to think that we should intend for our world to become a dystopian world where people have their genes altered involuntarily.

I find these correlation articles annoying because it takes the vagaries of biology with all of it's complex feedback, self modifying and massive scale systems and then extracts a "maybe"-style conclusion.

Particularly egregious is nearly anything relating to behavior. To use an example from the popular TV series House, an inmate had an adrenal tumor that would spike his fight or flight response in an erratic and massive fashion -- Foreman argued that tumor was responsible for said inmates behavior and would testify on his behalf; House pointed out there were other, similar cases of adrenal cancers, and yet very few of them committed such heinous crimes, indicating that the individual ultimately chooses their behavior, for good or ill.

Discipline is the art of the mind asserting conscious control over the body. It's why we simply don't act on every impulse.

The thought of anyone justifying a particularly dishonest behavior as "genetics" is rotten.

And one aspect of science I seem to see get abused routinely, for religion to politics, is that of responsibility and justifications.

Please note, I am explaining why I find this style of research reporting annoying, not this particular piece.

The actual paper does nothing more than posit a correlation, the article just takes it way too far as usual.

And yeah, house sucks Tongue
