At least some are to operate the automatic transmission. Those to the left of the wheel, I think. The ones on the right are environmental controls?

Can't remember the model (Valiant?) but I seem to recall automatic transmission buttons in the center of the steering wheel on something.

My dad had an old dodge pickup with a push button trans. Early 60's if I remember right.
