Yup.  It was actually slated to be cancelled after series two (I think the US call them 'seasons'), but a letter writing campaign by the fans convinced NBC to keep it going. It was actually more of a money maker in syndication than during the original run.

All the other Treks are good too.
Voyager is the best... So is TOS. So is TNG.

I lost interest in Trek when they decided everything had to be retro and with Abrams movies.

I don't know why I thought there were twenty-something seasons of the show.  I came across it on Netflix, and it only had three seasons available.  I thought: this isn't right.  I looked at the internet movie database, and turns out there were only three seasons.

All of us Trek fans have our opinions and they are all subjective so none are objectively right or wrong but here is my opinion:

The original Star Trek series (3 seasons, 79 episodes) attracted me by its Secular Humanist values. It was later revealed that Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry was a devout Secular Humanist himself. He was a man with a lot of vision but he also had a lot of flaws. He had an ego the size of Andromeda and was a legendary womanizer.

ST-TNG was even more to Roddenberry's vision than the original series - because now he had more power to get what he wanted. His vision of a highly-evolved humanity was on full display here - albeit with its difficulty in telling a fictional story because fiction thrives on conflict and Roddenberry didn't want any.

ST-DS9 occurred after Roddenberry's death and was much "grittier" than any Star Trek which had come before. I doubt Gene would have liked it. I personally loved it. It depicted a Star Trek universe which was not so black and white. Morality was explored quite deeply here and sometimes it was very difficult to figure who was on the right side. I think this was a very good thing. Many Star Trek fans might point to The Original Series or Star Trek: The Next Generation as being more cerebral but I think DS9 asked the deeper moral questions.

ST-VOY was a downgrade in quality. I think it was still a valuable and overall-positive contribution to the Star Trek universe. Most of the characters were dull and it featured a Captain of questionable mental stability.

ST:ENT played so fast and loose with continuity, it is difficult to fit it in with the rest of the Star Trek universe. There were some excellent 4th-season episodes but it was too late by then. They had so butchered established continuity by then that too many fans were no longer interested.

The less said about the Abrams butchery, the better. That is not Star Trek.

Discovery is good if you can get past the main character's background (I still hate her foster parentage - a new character would've worked just as well without making the universe seem smaller). It's not connected to anything Abrams. It takes place just before TOS.

I think that prequels are more attractive to potential show writers because Voyager went to anime levels of technology power creep. By the end there was almost nothing a dose of Borg nanoprobes couldn't fix. It's hard enough to create drama in a post-scarcity setting without that.

@AFTT I think the biggest problem with Voyager was the fact that it essentially started as a TNG reboot with a new ship and characters, when they had essentially wound up TNG because they had run out of ideas. The second biggest problem was they put their Captain in a spot at the end of the pilot that any captain who got a ship on merit would have gotten out of after five seconds thinking.

Given these issues they needed a top showrunner to rescue the series. They didn't hire one.

On Enterprise it sometimes feels like B&B were trying to kill the franchise.

On STD I can't legally watch the show but from SFDebris reviews I'm confident that's no loss. The crew display the arrogance and smugness of early TNG, the incompetence of early Voyager and the crazy of early "Duchess" Archer. And then they decided to dump their original plot for a mirror universe plot which destroyed any attempts to then for world and character building. Nothing about it tells me that it's worth watching.
