Atheists: What would you say to a dying child who asks you if they'll go to heaven?

I tell them they're going to Tahiti.  It's a magical place.

Honestly, if you're going to comfort a kid, you might as well make it fun. "You'll be reincarnated as Superman, and you'll be able to fly, and you'll never feel pain again."

Personally, I always thought heaven sounded boring.
The whole tone of Church teaching in regard to woman is, to the last degree, contemptuous and degrading. - Elizabeth Cady Stanton

I would tell the child that when they die that they will go to Heaven, if I thought that such was what they wanted to hear and would provide emotional and mental comforts to them and their families.  If someone "called me out" on my behavior, I would just claim that I am an agnostic, which is, at least in part, true!

I would lie to the kid and tell them yes you are going to heaven and don't worry, Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy will still visit you there. I don't see anything wrong with lying to a dying child to bring them comfort, if the worst consequence is someone may question my non-belief then that is something I am willing to live with.

It doesn't matter what you say to them, they'll be dead and won't remember.

I hope you don't mean that.

What I believe doesn't matter. I would comfort them as much as I could.

And what if a dying kid had something to say to you?

If you were in this situation facing a dying kid telling the truth may still be the best option because it's hard for smart people to correlate themselves in the failed logic of god and afterlife even if they are dying kids

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

As a nurse I can't really "answer" that question. Instead, I would have to state, "that's a question for your parents".

Are you the head nurse?
