Justice, Spy World Veterans Warn Of Consequences If Trump Releases Secret Docs

But FISA applications are prepared by career lawyers at the Justice Department and the FBI, supported by volumes of underlying evidence, and require signoff from high levels at both institutions.

The applications on Page, who was exposed to law enforcement scrutiny over his ties with Russia, were approved four different times — by political officials from administrations representing both Democrats and Republicans.

The signature of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on the final application — who was nominated by Trump and confirmed by the Republican Senate — has made Rosenstein a political target of conservatives.

Carrie Cordero, a former Justice Department national security lawyer who handled such applications, said she was "deeply concerned about the motivations and timing for this upcoming release."

"While transparency about intelligence community operations is important, the continued release of information related to the Russia investigation, the Carter Page FISAs and related materials appears to be for political purposes as we near midterm election," said Cordero, now a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security.

"That neither builds confidence in intelligence community activities nor enhances the nation's security."

The topmost Justice Department officials involved also privately object, according to one account.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the ranking member of the House intelligence committee, said he had been "previously informed" by FBI Director Christopher Wray and Rosenstein that some of the materials Trump has ordered to be released amount to a "red line that must not be crossed as they may compromise sources and methods."

"This is evidently of no consequence to a president who cares about nothing about the country and everything about his narrow self-interest," Schiff said.

Sessions spoke Wednesday during a gathering of state and local law enforcement officials in Illinois. His statement about the activist groups echoed a dubious claim that Sessions has made in the past about a consent decree entered into by the ACLU and the Chicago Police Department, which went into effect in 2016, that required increased review of the department's stop-and-frisk policy.

Citing a 2018 study by two researchers at the University of Utah, Sessions said Wednesday that the ACLU consent decree "allowed this bloodshed to take place."

While the homicide rate in Chicago did spike in 2016, Sessions' claim that it was caused by the consent decree has been largely debunked by fact checkers.

Sessions cited the same study in May, when he told police officers that "if you want crime to go up, let the ACLU run the police department." The Washington Post Fact Checker at the time rated the claim mostly false, noting that after agreements similar to the ACLU consent decree were reached in other cities — the Post cites Newark, New Jersey; Philadelphia, and Seattle — homicide rates actually fell in subsequent years.

I pray you are right. I am retiring this year and I have made alot in my 401K. If the dems win, I will lose big time and the booming economy will start to fall again. I hope Republicans and Independents realize this is the most important midterm elections in our lifetime. I like the extra money I recieve every week in my check from the tax cuts. I like that my bonus was taxed less. I like that I have made as much in my 401K this year than my salary as well. I will also pay recieve more in my tax return as well.

1) the stock market is not the economy.  In fact given what's happened over the last thirty years in corporate governance and oversight the stock market no longer bears any resemblance to the economy at all.
2) Joe do you know who's fucked over your pension all these years?  Yes that's right it's the republitraitor party, they've removed pension protections, allowed companies and pensions advisors to go for the most risky options (in blatant disregard of the clients' needs), they've allowed the fattening of fees, they've allowed companies to not pay their share.  All those things that make it harder for people to have a pension when they retire.
3) The extra money you receive from your tax cuts, unless you're a 1%er (and you're not, your pension wouldn't be a bare bones 401K) is at most a couple of hundred dollars (which your company will claw back in worse wages and longer hours anyway).  To pay for the tax cuts Joe, the republitraitors have decided to cut thousands of dollars off your social protection entitlements, your childrens' schooling, your emergency hospitals your roads maintenance.  You know the natives who sold Manhattan for a few glass beads got a better deal.
