The difference between kingships, which are dictatorships, or one party states, is that all of them are controlled by a select few. Authoritarian rule is easier but less humane to dissent. Pluralism is far harder to defend.

The evolutionary reality unfortunately is that BOTH work.  You can beat your rival into submission, or you can seek cooperation which works too. 

Putin may not be a king, in name, but it makes no difference to me. He created the narrative and he controls it now. Authoritarian is just that, be it one man, one family or one party.

Flip the situation. Suppose that in Obama's second year journalists had said to lefties, If proof that Obama wasn't born in the US was found, would you still support him? I'm pretty sure that you could have easily found people to say Yes.
