Why are our mini-computers called smartphones?

I text way more than I call people, even then it's usually whatsapp.

I keep my phone for "911". Pity I can't guarantee I'll be able to work the phone when I need to. Just part of the crap shoot.

Because Apple wanted to enter the very large and lucrative phone market. If they marketed their first iPhones as small, portable computers, they'd be competing with their own products, like iBooks - and many people still wouldn't be interested. Since the late 90's everybody needs a mobile phone, many people use multiple, or upgrade to the newest model every year - of course you want to sell expensive toys to them, rather than to computer nerds.

I use my smart phone for:

texting
camera
photo display
reading (kindle)
weather
twitter
facebook
navigation (hooks up to car and displays on screen)
music in car, gym, camping
movies while camping
productivity tracking
exercise tracking
diet tracking
internet
task management (todoist, zenkit)
banking
geocaching
journal
uber

and, once or twice a week, phone calls.

Because if we called them 'radioactive lemur turds', nobody would buy one.  Marketing is everything.

I hear ya. The company I work for gave one of them old phones for work purposes. Get alot of calls on that one than my personal one. Well its their equipment.

I have talked so much about integrating certain things about work with the company database. Like warehouse stock. It would help immensely.

Never the less, that phone keeps ringing even when I am in vacation. Wtf. If I died suddenly they would die and couldn't figure shit out? I can scarcely believe that. Its sheer lazyness. Instead of using their heads, call me for decisions.

So yeah, at least my smartphone is better to my stress than the company keyboard mobile.

Like..to talk to people?  With your voice?  Doesn't it have text?  Wink

I can't talk shit tho.  My wife handed me an iphone last week..first phone I've had since I was a teen.  She didn't ask, just handed it to me.  Here's your phone, this is your number, call me.

I hate texting.  My wife was texting with my son and I'm like "Why don't you just fucking CALL HIM?!"
