Sexual abuse in the Catholic church. How widespread is it?

LOL what does that mean 6%? What about all the rest of clergy that enables them to rape kids? Like one of the recent cases posted by Jörmungandr where it was discovered that in two Catholic schools priests and monks were openly abusing kids for 40 years while the staff didn't do anything

Quote:It states many of the perpetrators did not hide their sexual interests from the children and pupils were often abused in front of each other.

"The blatant openness of the activities demonstrates there was a culture of acceptance of abusive behaviour," it said.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I mean 6% offend. And a depressingly large portion of the rest cover it up because they think that just sweeping it under the rug until it hits critical mass is better than the consequences of just letting the scandal run its course naturally.

Waiting? For 40 years?! I mean talk about monk's patience. But that's actually called being complicit. And also all that time Catholic Church is selling people the idea "Let us deal with this problem our self." and yet if this is the way they "deal" with that problem (and too many cases show they do) then let the police deal with it.

Pretty much. Look at Crimen Solicitationis; for years, it was the official protocol for the RCC for dealing with sexual abuse by priests. And by dealing with it, I mean just dealing with it like it's an ordinary sin, except that, instead of the priest-confessor being sworn to secrecy, it was the victims for whom the seal of confession was binding. Note: the sacrament of reconciliation does not normally work this way. And then the priest is sent to another parish for the cycle to repeat, because just doing the right thing is so much harder than this cycle of horseshit.

I once had an accounting class, and the professor talked about the BP oil spill, and he mentioned that it could have easily been prevented, but managerial accounters decided the repairs necessary to the Deepwater Horizon were too expensive and not cost-effective, and so they ended up with a disaster so big that the oil pool could have been seen from space. His moral: "Do the right thing the first time. It'll cost you less in the long run."

When it came to witches, the church had no problem handing people over to secular authorities. When it comes to their own, they do everything to avoid it.
