It's a good question.

Does science fiction take an author to be scientifically expert and writing to be realistic?

If you write "hard scifi" then your devices, etc., should be scientifically rational.

I do, but I am picky.
There is a lot of crap around.

Larry Niven does a fine job. "Ringworld is unstable!" So he wrote a whole book about how to keep it stable.

The hard scifi doesn't use magic to deal with problems. That's the best definition I've heard. Keep it internally consistent and allow the reader to fill in gaps, perhaps with some gentle guidance.

And keep Dr. Sumgai on the staff.

What do you think is a good adaptation of a scifi novel/short story to the screen? No wrong answers.
