Nothing separates us from our surroundings other than our ego, which is an incredible thing but also tends to curse us into holding a massive misunderstanding of the world around us, which generally results in religious belief and superstitions.

I would not say that we are immortal though. When thinking of ourselves purely in terms of energy, you're right. It's healthy to think about that sometimes, for the reasons mentioned above. The ego is what creates our identity. Obviously, that ceases to exist upon death. I'd argue that, while we are not immortal,  we experience immortality... if you make the assumption, as the majority of us here do, that you cease to exist upon death. We know we're not immortal because we see death happen in real time, but we will never truly experience our own death. Let's hope the dying part isn't too bad though...

Then what of "ego death?"

What do you mean?

I've always found that those in charge always find it easier to inform others that they need to let go of their egos.

Do you know what I mean when I say "ego"?

Ego death is a term used in various contexts of mysticism, as well as LSD pioneers in the west. Carl Jung used the term psychic death. The term ego death has deeper roots lying in the Mahayana Buddhist doctrines of Sunyata and Anatta. If you're interested this is all easy to find on the net.

I'm quite familiar with the concept. I didn't know what you meant when you said, "what of it"? What of what of it?

You had said "The ego is what creates our identity. Obviously, that ceases to exist upon death." However, the death of the ego may happen well before that, and is perhaps a necessary part of accepting our self in its purest form. Is our ego just maya?

You seem to be critiquing human meaning by pointing out that it doesn't exist outside of sentient beings. That seems an awful lot like complaining that there are no land-locked states along the shore. It leads to a so what moment. If you're going to critique ego and human meaning, you're going to need to do it on its own terms, otherwise you're just making category errors.
