No one knew what caused diseases then. There was no knowledge of germs. Medieval peasants had been taught by the church that any illness was a punishment from God for sinful behaviour. Therefore, any illness was self-imposed – the result of an individual’s behaviour.

Other theories put forward for diseases included “humours”. It was believed that the body had four humours (fluids in our bodies) and if these became unbalanced you got ill. Doctors studied a patient’s urine to detect if there was any unbalance.

And pounding someone on the head with a mace was one of their main "political" innovations.  At this time, the only light in the world was in the muslim areas and they had to go fuck that up in the name of 'allah.'

I'm sure most of us have multiple "beefs." But this thread isn't about those. Just about your biggest one. Theists encouraged to participate.

Mine: It's anti-intellectual. -- It discourages and disparages intellectual curiosity.

Three things, for me:

• Indoctrinating kids.
  
• Followers feeling entitled and compelled to force their views on others.
  
• The kind of "cult-like" mentality and special pleading. What I mean is the idea that a person might recognized faulty logic used by cult followers or adherents of other religions, then completely excuse the same behavior with their own religion. I remember doing this exact thing when I was Christian, and it troubled me. I knew it was problematic, but I wasn't ready to let go, and I didn't have a better answer. I largely just stopped thinking about it.

No, but they weren't much smarter.  After all Galen was one one of their top "physicians" and he came up with the theory of the 4 "Humours." 

This theory held that four humors or bodily fluids held the secret to health. These humors were, blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile.

Medicine probably killed more people than it saved until the science started to roll in on bacteria and viruses.  In fact until then praying to the god who isn't there was no less effective than current medical techniques and probably did a lot less harm.

Honestly, I recognize now that the question the OP presents is invalid. It's not really possible to separate out the evils of religion and identify one as prime above all others. It's like asking to singulate the evils of getting run over by a truck. Does it suck more that it hurts that your body is crushed or that you're dead? Meaningless question.
