Article is so so but this part really stuck out at me.
Quote: I tried once, I tried twice. Finally, they got back to me, and they said, "No. We don't want this help. We would never want it to get out. This comedian is dirty, this comedian is an atheist. You"—me—"have your own set of problems. And it wasn't worth the risk, because we're going to win."
Obviously of the four comedians mentioned in the article as the joke team,is that'sMaher, but the bigger question is why can't the Democratic candidate of all people, even employ an atheist to write a few jokes?
Atheists are one of the most hated minorities in America. Especially among non-college educated voters that made up a significant portion of Trump's demographic. Employing a known and hated atheist would be bad for the campaign. It's unclear what they mean by "dirty" here. I don't see anything problematic in the quote you provide. If it's talking about Bill Maher, he is dirty in multiple ways, as far as the Clinton campaign is concerned. He's not always respectful and uses vulgar language. He would be a drag on conservative leaning voters even in the absence of his atheism. And in addition to that, he is an atheist. (I'd also note the strategic placement of a comma between the statement that the comedian is dirty and that he is an atheist. That's an editorial comment, as it's spoken words, so whether a period or a comma belongs there is simply a guess. Charity demands that it not be interpreted as one statement.)
Why is any of this questionable?
