The thing is, there used to be message boards dedicated to those subjects. You need not have have joined this monolithic group which exists for no other reason than to mine your data and sell it to third parties.

You are not a costumer on Facebook. You are a commodity.

Not only that; you are stifling creativity by patronizing Facebook.

Why are you here on AF rather than a stupid Facebook group? It's better, right? So is everything else. A dedicated message forum has higher standards. Facebook lowers the bar.

Plus, I don't want to put all my information out for the world to see. I feel comfortable enough putting it out here because it's a limited arena. Why would I want to open myself up to an enormous forum - with very few individuals of which I have any affinity for at all?

I like Facebook. So many strange and interesting strangers with public pages. When I can’t sleep I browse through random strangers Facebook pages and read their posts and look at their pictures. Like a fucking stalker lmao

Facebook was fine until adults came along and ruined it

A ukelele jam group? Ok! You just proved the OP's point!

We love our ukes.  It's really hard to be anything but happy when playing a ukulele.  That and TTA are what have kept me relatively sane for the past couple of years.

Yeah, at one point I actually relented and tried to join facebook JUST for being able to see that ukulele jam page and the disgusting number of times I could only get a coupon or special "deal" through a facebook page.  But for some reason its system would NOT allow me to sign up as

The problem with Facebook is that people are dumb when it comes to using it.

Don't want all your private information sold? Don't supply it. Don't want to see dumb shit your friends post/share? Block those secondary/tertiary sources. Don't want randoms trying to friend you or commenting on your shit or stalking you? Learn to use the privacy features.

My timeline - the stuff I see from others - is tightly controlled. My profile is mostly private. I also run uBlock Origin as my ad-blocker. So, my Facebook experience is lean, with it being 99% information I want to see.

Regarding forums vs. Facebook, well, forums cost money. Look at this place. It costs Tibs over $500/year (https://atheistforums.org/thread-43841-p...pid1320507) to run. And it's not like the cost breakdown is somehow out of whack. The forums that have survived the 90s and 00s are the ones that have some sort of funding, either by being attached to some corporate entity or through donations from the userbase. It's not a Web 2.0 issue (and, seriously, no one uses that term any more). It's a cost issue. Most people have neither the financial inclination nor technical know-how to create and run an online forum.

Facebook has provided nice exposure for countless small businesses.

How so? If it wasn't for Facebook, I wouldn't have gotten creative enough for my cat to have his own blog.

They have these awesome things called privacy settings. With me - if you aren't in my friends list and you go to my wall you don't see my friends list or my photos. I've publicly shared maybe a handful of things and that's it. Non-friends see nothing. I'd say that's pretty damn private.

You post here - it's all public. Even guests who aren't members are allowed to lurk in subforums and read whatever they want. There's very few places here they can't go like the 18+ subforums. The only downside is that they cannot post unless they are a member, but all your other stuff is free to see.

Facebook is by no means perfect, but it's free for people to reconnect with just about anyone. You can block undesirables so they don't even see your home page.

I'm sure he does but that's not the direction I was going with it.

I have a Facebook account...

That I haven't signed into for almost a decade...

Figured I'd give it another 10 years, turn it into some fascinating time-capsule of all the things I gave a shit about in 2010.

Facebook is good for me to keep up with my grandkids who are a thousand miles away. And I post critter pictures...mostly for my own amusement.

I have locked down my page quite a bit lately. There are a couple pages I like to see regularly and I get some laughs from memes that are posted. I am more proactive with blocking junk that pops up instead of letting it get out of control.

Twitter, Reddit, Instagram...don't use them at all.

'Course now that TTA is dying I may be on FB more. sob

Unless it seems that AF is willing to tolerate me.
