Reading between the lines, it's astonishing to hear the Pope, of all people, aver such a high degree of diabolic influence and power being exercised (not exorcised) in the Church. I mean, if they believed this, an (otherwise) rational person in the church would be within reason to start wondering if their priest, their lay ministers, their bishops, their cardinals, and so forth might not be among the people the devil was currently manipulating. They might even consider the possibility that the Pope himself is being influenced by the devil... after all, if it's widespread enough to affect so many priests and cardinals, couldn't the devil influence the cardinals to elevate to the papacy someone influenced by the devil? Catholics who believed that the devil was running amok amidst the lines of authority throughout the hierarchy would certainly have cause to distrust that same hierarchy.
.... you know, if they didn't already distrust it because of all the child rape.
Like I said, I'm astonished to hear the Pope put this idea forward so openly. I wonder how many people will connect the dots.
