I put the euthanasia hammer in the SUV recently because the road kill numbers are up. I see more than one a week.

I' ll be eating wine sauce blackened backstraps on a bed of wild rice and scallions.

That sounds good (bar the scallions).  I'll probably do venison soon.

We knew a farmer a few years ago who planted 400 acres of beans. The bean plants grew strong and healthy and started producing.  He went to sleep one night thanking his God for a bountiful harvest that would make up for the last year's drought crop.

The next morning he woke up, stretched, looked out his window and saw a herd of deer in his bean field.  He grabbed his gun and started shooting.  By the time the herd ran away he was left with less than 40 acres of bean plants.

One less farmer to put food on our tables the next year.

OLB.  The King INSISTS that his venison (after butchering) has to sit outside in coolers in the shed overnight before he freezes it.  We've argued about this for years, but I have to admit he's never food-poisoned me.  I see you said it goes straight in the freezer.  Any good arguments for me to use as to why?

It depends on the size and capacity of a freezer. If it' s cold out - the meat may cool down faster outside than it would in a freezer.

If under 40f - it' s perfectly safe to hang outside.


I have a big ( 140 cu ft) walk in that I built in my garage - that will turn a good sized deer into a popsicle overnight - with the hide on.

As long as it's used for food I don't care, neither should the rest of you. Unfortunately the hunting days have passed me by. 

Is it only whitetail? No mule or  antelope? Is chronic wasting disease present?

Mulies are very rare here - but no license is needed should you bag one. Elk qute a bit north of here..

Thankfully - no CWD.

And yes - it's a food thing. I don't even keep antlers - as i don't eat that part.

I butcher my own too. Field to freezer usually under an hour.

Sigh there is a difference between raising animals for food and going out and killing a wild animal and one does not need to be a vegan to object to a specific form of acquiring meat . By this logic a cannibal could say to someone who objects to them eating people " do you know were you get your meat from ? "

We'd always age our deer a few days, if the temp was right, before freezing.

And doing so with weapons.

It's the trophy hunters who should be forced to hunt their prey with their own natural weapons.

A friend of mine does the same, field to freezer in under an hour. He gave me a nice piece of venison and I have to admit it was the best I’ve ever tasted.

OLB hunts to put food on the table. Those with issues need to stand in front of the meat counter at the grocery and remember that someone had to kill that filet or pork chop. Just because you aren't the one to do it doesn't make you superior to the hunter who does it themselves.


Trophy hunters are a whole other thing. They suck.
