US - raise the gas tax

NO, we need to get off gas. The price, high or low, does not matter. It will cost the world more in pollution, natural disasters, crop failures, basically hurting global stability.

I would prefer we got off it too, especially since we're getting into conflicts with other countries just over oil. Or making alliances with horrible countries just because they have oil.

Ya just don't get it.

For a bunch of " SJW" s  it seems you don't see further than your wallet.

...

A gas tax is for one thing - to leave some for future generations.....

Oil is finite. You' re condemming future generations - and they will curse the gluttons.

Expecting " alternative power" to replace hydrocarbons is akin to the Jebus sniffers expecting him to return and save them from Armaggedon.

Um no, gas is not a necessity. It is an addiction protected by global oil greed.

If humanity had been listening to scientists back in the late 1800s when it was first calculated as to the amount of dangerous CO2 levels could harm the planet, if industry had done the right thing back then, innovation for clean energy could have succeeded by now.

We even had solar technology starting in the early 1900s.

It isn't a matter of too much tax or no taxes, or too much regulation vs no regulation. It is a matter of stopping monopolies of power and getting global industry to compete to solve problems, not always compete to grow.

RE: US - raise the gas tax
I would be in favor of a modest hike in gasoline tax (maybe $0.50/gallon) if the revenues were put into tax credits or rebates for those who buy electric cars.

I can see both sides.

Electric cars with practical range are still expensive because of the cost of producing the batteries. They are simply out of the range of many consumers. So we don't want to put too much pressure on people who simply can't afford to go electric.

On the other hand, battery-electric cars are clearly the future. We MUST go there - the sooner, the better. If it takes government manipulation of economic incentives to force the issue, that's what we need to do.

The data is in. We MUST get off of fossil fuels. The wide-spread adoption of battery-electric vehicles is a major component of doing that. We NEED to do it. If it takes government manipulation, so be it.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

In the good old US of A the average cost per litre is between $ 0.70 and. $0.85.  in the UK its £ 1:39. If our petrol cost 85 cents I reckon there would be dancing in the streets.

Price today in GER: 1,5€/l = 6,80$/usgal Read

By the way: what happened here when gas got more expensive is people buying more andmore useless heavy 2t brocks called "SUV". "Why" you may ask? Because the auto manufacturers designed more efficient engines (like those common rail diesels). In effect the vehicles still use less pretol after having increased in weight from like 1t in average to 1,5-1,8 (gonna get worse with electric vehicles). Of course with only 1t vehicles mileage nowadays would be insane, but hey, be honest, who wants to miss his extra cup holder or A/C? Wacky

I hope you are not missing my point. I am not blaming anyone for doing what they need to do as individuals. I am blaming oil companies and governments for not funding clean energy long ago. Nobody is suggesting we stop making transportation, just move away from fossil burning transportation.

RE: US - raise the gas tax
One really good way to get people to drive fewer KM is to reduce urban sprawl. Here are a few ideas:

1. Stop building communities that are so car reliant.

2. Promote mixed-use developments.

3. Increase funding for public transport and make good public transport more accessible.

4. Make areas more walkable.

5. Promote cycling and make roads safer for cyclists.
