Any Environmental Watchdogs here?

This subject came up this morning - and inspiration said to post it here.
Who keeps track of hazardous waste sites?
Because I can't find one listed - that I know exists. I was there by accident with a buddy of mine, and there were government types in " moon suits" running about - who told us it was a quarrentine zone - and made us leave.
They covered an area 100 yards or so circular - with concrete - put up a fence and a guardhouse --- and we never heard a peep about it in the news. This was the late 1980s.
You can see the remains - on Google Earth. Look up Bittersweet ski resort in Allegan County Michigan. Go about 1/2 mile west. There is a spur of road that comes off 105th Ave. At the right hand side of the end of the spur - the concrete is still visible - with trees growing through the concrete...
Yeah - I' m sure THAT made it safe.....
Wonder what kinda ungodly shit they were trying to cover up?? Literally.

I would imagine the nature and location would determine the government department
Is it ?
Radio Active
Biological
Chemical
Or even a natural phenomenon
Who's land is it ?
Who or what caused whatever it is to be there ?
Military project
Industry
Any details on the kind of suits they were using ?
And trees you say that's very interesting so it's lethal enough to kill plant life or cause ground sterilization

When I trained as a "hazmateer", "moon suits" were for biological or chemical cleanup, or non-neutron or -gamma emitting radioactive waste, i.e., alpha or beta emitters, which cannot penetrate much of anything. Anyway, you have some serious chemical contamination in that area. Unsapien has found the bad chemical players; now you need to go look and see if that contamination plume extends into your ground water, if you have a well. Looks like another military supply source that may have just been spilling shit for years, before a lot of the effects were understood. I lived not far from the Lockheed plant in Burbank, and they were paying big bucks for pumping water from local aquifers to remove the shit that they had that leaked from corroded underground storage tanks and contaminated the underground wells in that area. My MiL got a map from the city of Los Angeles that details where the plume from contamination is proceeding south and a bit east from a Hughes Aircraft facility located about 4 miles from her house.
ETA- That is some ace detective work, right there, Unsapien!

Awesome detective work Unsapien...
Those images are the " before" shots - and must be from the mid 80 ' s or so - judging from the lack of trees - and Bittersweet was just opened - and not fully developed.
The second pic shows some sort of layout on the ground - I suspect they were simply dozering stuff under.
I' m gonna drag this to a guy know who lives close to it - and see what he knows about it.
It' s scary to think what kind of toxic shit the pricks stuck in the ground -- for a buck.....

I'm thinking that it's more along the lines of inadvertent leakage. Not that this is an excuse for letting it go on, but I don't know what really happened there. Any leakage problems should have been corrected as soon as they were found, but you know how that goes. Then again, there is dumb shit behavior afoot. I was in charge of an operation that yielded some extremely low level toxic waste, a few years ago. The janitors took the toxic waste barrel out with the regular trash, just because it was near the regular trash. They are supposed to be at least smart enough to only take out the regular trash, and to know the difference. Big brouh-ha-ha about it inside the company, until I figured out the actual level of potential contamination. Then, the whole problem went away. I'm talking micrograms of waste. Saner heads finally prevailed. If I had crapped in that bucket, it would have been a worse problem.

It' s unlikely.
There' s nothing to leak from.
It' s the middle of the boonies. No buildings there.
They trucked it in, whatever it was..
