[Serious] Make Atheist Forums Great Again (Part 2)

RE: Make Atheist Forums Great Again (Part 2)
I think this is a great compromise. If this isn't good enough, nothing will be. This should be the home run. *fingers crossed*

Much like the "civil" subforum. For exactly the same reasons.
That said. Your house, your rules. And someone making a thread in your house: their sub-house and sub-rules. I'm perfectly fine with them setting their bar for discussion.

I'm free not to talk to them in said threads. Just too bad that it might become a bit less chatty in here.
(Then again, I might be mistaken, it might lead to more and deeper discussion. But I personally doubt it.)

That’s the whole point, though - threads which were intended to be serious in nature frequent get derailed by humour and/or antagonism (guilty!). This isn’t anything more than an attempt to keep such threads on track.

That being said, I doubt there‘s much chance of [Serious] threads taking over the Forum. If it should appear to be trending that way, never fear - I’ve got thousands of horrible jokes on tap lighten the mood.  Wink

Yes, and I understand what you and Shell B are saying. And I'm saying, go right ahead. (Not that you need my blessing!)
I just wanted to let you know I'm personally not a fan of such subrules, and will therefore probably not participate to begin with. (Which I guess works out for whoever makes a [serious] thread.)
Others can and should do as they damn well please. I know I can choose not to post in a thread.

I kind of just wanted it out there, because if you make such a thread I'll ignore it. Even if it is a topic of interest to me.
Not that I think people here are waiting for my two cents in particular. But seeing as I'm not going to go into a [serious] thread and say 'I'm not posting any further because this is a [serious] thread, though your topic is interesting and I have certain views on it', I just wanted to state my opinion here, and leave it at that.

I doubt very many people are going to use the serious tag often, and many that will have the serious tag won't be able to be taken seriously, so will be largely ignored. When they are used, and it's a genuinely good topic, you might find you naturally abide by the spirit of the thread anyway.

Either way, I think there will still be plenty of threads for everyone.

Fair enough - no one is required to participate in any thread.

Shame, though - I think you have a lot to offer.

I think it's great. Same idea as the civility section thing, except you put it on the thread title instead of putting it into a section. Sounds good.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

I dig it.

I also dig that if people want to make a joke, they can... they just gotta contribute to the conversation to justify it. I also think that (ideally) the prohibition on jokes should be loosely enforced, while insults and the like enforced more strictly.

Also, would it be possible to implement a 30/30 rule on posting [serious] threads? I'd hate to grant passing trolls like CDF immunity from ridicule. I understand if that can't be implemented, but it's a concern that springs to mind.

Not the worst idea.

This is something to consider.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
