Old age stories in the news.....

Every so often we see stories about people who reach over 100 years. And the stories always include campy cliches quoting the person as to why they made it so long.
Some old people are quoted as saying, "I eat this, I drink this, I do that".....
Of course the God rhetoric came up in this story. But I really don't care about this guy saying that. For a black man to fight in the Pacific and defeat fascism, and risk his life, still to come back and face the still existing segregation, knowing I couldn't do it, it still does not make any god/deity real.
Some stories quoted him as smoking cigars and drinking whiskey and going to church. No, the real reason he survived, is that he got lucky in the war. After that he kept himself out of trouble, had a good diet, and on top of that, he had damned good genes. Most humans don't reach 100 years, much less 112.
This guy was alive for the Titanic, stock market crash that caused the Great Depression, WW2, Kennedy, Space Shuttle, the first PCs, 9/11 and cell phones. And all the history in between. Amazing life.
Outside the god claim though, the one thing he said quoted in a couple of stories I did love, because it was all over the news on every channel, is that he also equated his old age to not having kids. I SO GET THAT! It is always great when parents love their kids, but some people simply don't want them. I get him on that. I am already mess taking care of myself.
I value his service, and damned glad humans like him fought so I could live today. But cigars and whiskey and Church are not why he lived as long as he did.
I thank him for his service. But old age is not magic or coming from above. He had good genes he was a good man, but there was no magic to it.
A real President, our prior President Obama also honored him a few years ago.
