Our National Broadband System is a multi billion $  project conceived by and implemented by a Labor government. Then we had a change in government. The the  conservatives decided to change it, to save money. Today, most people get  'fibre to the node' instead of 'fibre to the premises.' I have fibre to the premises. There are two largish boxes attached to an inside wall.

Our politicians seem oblivious/ indifferent to how poorly our system compares internationally.  I wish I could think of a way to cause them deep embarrassment over this issue. Then they might pull their finger out.

Everyone gets NBN connected, it's mandatory to have the connection, but you don't have to use it, except for phones.

Well, we had a National Broadband Plan whereby it was proposed to roll out 1 Mbps broadband to everyone. Now we sit in a position that it has taken so long for the ebil gubmit to extract a digit that all of the providers bar one have bailed out of said plan and are doing their own thing installing fibre to the home. I find it fascinating that the ebil gubmint is so thick that by the time they manage to organise themselves, tech has moved on in leaps and bounds. Who needs 1 Mbps when I am sitting on a thousand?

The NBP is still at the tendering stage, population 1 and the one remaining player has no infrastructure at all. The ebil gubmint is still at the point of asking "Whats dial-up?" And yes, I am old enough to remember the modem song.

Jebus. I download 50 GB in a pretty decent day of computing-- download say all the Star Wars movies and a few videos about pizza delivery, and you'll hit that.

Korea does have limits on phone data, though, but you can get unlimited data for a slight premium.
