Don't worry about that. These forums are built for debate and discussion, so disagreements are going to crop up everywhere. The key is to not upset people for no good reason, or out of context. For example, I disagree with a few members because they are extremely socialist and I am a more "liberal capitalist", but that doesn't mean I'm going to disagree with things they say in other topics, such as when debating Evolution Big Grin

But it still might, and frankly I think conflict drives discussion.

If we all agreed, what would be the point?

I whole heartedly concur.

It's a shame that some people in disagreeing with you, also manage to piss you off, or offend. I suppose that is always going to happen though as people have strong feelings.

Um, who's bursting a blood vessel? I was simply pointing out that there are genuinely people out there who don't care ... atheists (though they might not describe themselves as such) who don't care about religion, about science, about much else but their own lives. These people don't necessarily have a theory about how things came to be.

If your knowledge will assist me I will listen and learn from you. you see I always was given to believe that someone opinion was one own belief and not a statement of what others should follow or even accept.

I'll do my best (I always do) but I am far from being the smart one around here ... trust me there's some very clever bods in this place Smile

Hi again Kyu.
Yes I believe your correct, this is why I wanted to join this forum,When you approach your twilight years and know the end of life is near, you become more likely to try to find answers to things that as a young man never entered my head. 4 years ago the doctors in the ITU saved my life and now I have just been given my bowel cancer retests results and they are positive, these things you have to live with to understand what death is about, no I have no fear of death, but like all living things, I do not want to die but again like all living things I must. Some one on one of my USA forums said in a debate on religion ,why do theist believe in a mythical being they call a god, and the unanimous answer was that the fear of death and the need to believe their is an after life, but who created this belief in god the answer was the rulers of ancient empires could not control the masses of people under their rule so gods were created by these rulers to put the fear of death and no afterlife into the masses to control them.
This to me was a logical explanation of why man worships gods. once again we will never know if it is fact but as you say Kyu does it matter.I don't really think it does.

Rex.

The results were positive? You mean positive you have cancer or positive you're clear? I hope it's the latter but something about the way you write indicates the former and if so ... well ... there's not much I can say except sorry mate. My wife has had cancer (currently, fingers-crossed, near 10 years clear), her mother, father and several members of her family have died form cancer as did my father (though his was smoking related) and I'm plain paranoid about it and dying in general.

Well I didn't quite say it doesn't matter, I said there are people to whom it doesn't matter ... to me these things matter a great deal. I accept that people might take that stance but I don't understand it ... as Dawkins says a universe with a god is bound to be different from one without and that the fundamental question of the existence of such a creator god is important because of its ramifications.

I am sorry to hear about your positive test results peregrine.Regarding religion I am an atheist who was a former Pentecostal evangelist.I have been an atheist for about 14 years now.I still have interest in the subject of death and a world without God.I feel that the belief in gods/godesses is nothing more than mans quest to understand the world we live in and his place in it.Religion helps us explain those things which in those primitive times were once unknowable before there were actual sciences not hindered by superstition to explain such natural phenomenon as rain, earthquakes and natural disasters etc.

Greek mythology illustrates this point perfectly. In Greek myth they have a god or goddess for just about every natural phenomenon or occurence.Hence as a result of these beliefs they made up rituals to appease the gods when things went wrong. This is a rather simplistic explanation of where I believe our religious beliefs originated from.I do agree with you to an extent regarding the powers of government using religion as a means of controlling the masses through fear. But I believe this was a later development.
There is nothing people will not maintain when they are slaves to superstition
