The article you posted is referencing the information put out by the IIHS. If you have a study that is supposedly newer than the one done in 2017 by the IIHS, please link it so we can both be clear about what we're talking about. The article you posted also says, "The new reports do not prove there’s a direct risk caused by the use of marijuana among motorists."

You seem to be much more concerned about cannabis than about alcohol, with drunk-driving contributing to over 10,000 car deaths annually. If the issue is lowering the number of deaths from impaired drivers, certainly we should be weary of keeping alcohol legal as well.

Like I said, with the information we have, it's POSSIBLE that cannabis is causing more reported car collisions, but it's not proven. I also think it's very early in the game to start making any blanket statements.

I seem to be more concerned about cannabis than alcohol? Where the hell did that come from?  Of course I have a problem with drunk drivers. A huge one. And if we have a problem with drunk drivers, then it totally makes sense to have a problem with stoned drivers as well.

Sure, but in comparison, drunk driving is obviously MUCH bigger a problem. So where is this hard-nosed attitude about cannabis coming from? The very studies YOU'RE quoting are saying the results are inconclusive, but you're basically suggesting what you're saying as fact, as if 6,000 more people are going to die every year because of cannabis, which is simply false.
If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth.

They're working on a thc detection/analyzer to address the issue of impaired while driving: https://www.npr.org/2018/08/04/634992695...here-maybe

There will eventually be a standard for impaired driving but it might take some time. Same as with alcohol.

Does anyone else hear 9000 cannibals?

I think this is awesome, if they can actually do it. Obviously impaired driving is not as safe and sober driving, regardless of what substance someone is using.

But to the point of the thread I'd like to see this repeated in other states where recreational cannabis use has been legalized. There's no reason to put people in jail for using a relatively harmless plant.

We do have a standard in Washington state, but it's absolute unscientific horseshit.  A medical patient (of which I am one) will fail every single time, stone cold sober.

I don't really need to drive much, so I'd refuse the test and take the automatic one year suspension.  If they come up with one that actually works, I'd have no problem taking it, as I don't drive impaired.

Also, riddle me this.... If it took a constitutional amendment to ban alcohol at a Federal level, why did it not take one to ban cannabis?

It was a rhetorical question.

I assumed it was, but that's beside the point. This is a serious issue in this country that stems from racism and bigotry. This is part of why I think it's so important for us to "get past" this strange obsession our country has with demonizing weed - it's a relatively harmless plant that almost a million people a year are put in jail for which is insane. Imagine if someone put you in jail for having a beer after work... It's utter nonsense. I understand that, especially with the population here on AF, I'm probably preaching to the choir, but it's something that really gets under my skin.
