[Serious] What would you want in a church
#31
RE: What would you want in a church
my intent wasn't to put words int your mouth, just to come up with 3 solid points to add to the list since you don't care enough to want to change anything. I wasn't asking to change anything or argue dogma, just a thought exercise on what you'd want / don't want in a church. It's pretty obvious you don't want sexism in a church that'll be the only one I can really take from you since you don't want to extrapolate or allow me to read in between the lines of your statements.

1. don't want sexism
2. don't force people to be there
3. clearly defined dogmas so no fine print - is one you didn't say but strongly implied

Thanks for the input.

1.  No bullshit.
2. No proselytizing.
3.  Pay your taxes.

I know...I know, that would put contemporary churches out of business.  So what, they're scams..no one should be more concerned by that than christians.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

My dude...Allow ME to clarify MY position.

It's not a matter of "not wanting" sexism in the church. Railing against sexism in the church is essentially a fool's errand, as the church is only acting as the Bible commands. Any woman who takes issue with it need only know that the church is simply following orders.

I know better than to propose "no sexism", because I recognize that there is no Christian church---as in one that ADHERES to alleged Word of Biblical God, without sexism. The heart of the issue lies in the Word itself, not within the church body.

Allowing women an equal voice and authority over men in the church would indeed be sacrilege in it's open defiance of men's God-given spiritual authority over weaker vessels and blatant disrespect for God's order, in accordance to the Good Book. That's why I stated that there is nothing that I could suggest that wouldn't be decidedly anti-Biblical, rendering it a moot point.

Lol....You were asking what we'd want/not want in a CHRISTIAN church, were you not?

I mean, if you're vetting ideas for some New Age, watered-down, offshoot of Christianity/Christian church that embraces Hippie Jesus and tosses everything else aside then just say so.
I've got plenty of ideas.

Sure thing thena clarify away. I did not clarify a level of bible thumping or adhereane to any particular set of dogma or foundational doctrine.

An example would be a Christian church that didn’t allow Bibles only moral stories and the “sanctuary” was more like a free coffee house with only rap music and no offering plates. Or a homeless shelter/food bank only church that passes out the website for a hotline and a daily scripture read from the female pastor with every bag of groceries.

Feel free to go wild with your ideas or corrections of current denominations.

Going wild?

In absence of foundational doctrine, what do you have? Not Christianity.
Christianity Lite perhaps, or 2.0, maybe?

Fanfiction? Lol

Anyhow, makes no difference to me.
Good luck with the relaunch.

Well, the Mormon Church acknowledges it's break from mainstream Christianity and recognizes itself as "something different".

If OP wishes to improve upon the faith by omitting or ignoring that which he doesn't like, making up some new stuff as he goes along, and then slapping the label of "Christianity" on it, then fine with me. I'm well aware that his hypothetical new denomination wouldn't be the first or the last to do as much.

It's still pandering, nonetheless. In which all denominations do to varying degrees, of course.

Though there is much in the Bible that is subject to debate, the God of Abraham's position on the submission of women in the home and in the church is crystal clear. Departures from that aren't simply matters of interpretation or tastes, in the minds of serious religious folk. Lol...it's open defiance.

I tend to agree with them. In accordance to the "Good Word", they've definitely got a leg to stand on.

RE: What would you want in a church
I (irregularly) attend a Unitarian Universalist congregation. It's nearly as close to ideal for me as a religious center can get. But if I could improve it:

1. Still too conventionally 'churchy'. The Christians decided we're not Christian enough to be counted as a Christian denomination, let a tradition go once in a while.

2. I don't mind the occasional sing-along, but most of the hymns were written before I was born and the one Holly Near song is getting old. More modern songs and do a better job of making sure everyone can sing them, and at the same time not so many new songs, we sound awful trying to sing something for the first time. And make sure the lyrics aren't problematic, a lot of UUs like to skip the parts they don't agree with. When I first started attending, I was anticipating 1960s music, not 1860s.

3. There's five colleges in this town, invest in some outreach. The problem with UUs isn't that there aren't enough of them, it's that too many people who would fit well don't know there is such a thing. The UU I attend seems very happy where it's at, but avoiding growth is not fair to those who would benefit from having a community that suits them.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

@Mister Agenda
1. could you please better explain "churchy"? IS the the stuffyness or the stained glass, etc.
2. Like a projection screen with the lyrics and with a bouncing dot?
3. Any particular method of outreach you would like to see?
