Seems to me you are the one having problems with belief, the man believes what he does because that satisfies him, it doesn't satisfy the scriptures and those are the truth. He's lying to himself to keep perceived problems from confusing him. Study is always the best way to understand the truth, simply producing his own truth doesn't make it truth at all.

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Not interested in hypotheticals.  I'm simply saying the Christian concept of an eternal hell, believed in 'Christian' cultures', is a  Church invention as far as I'm aware.

There have been different notions of 'hell' in other cultures, for millennia. Christian eternal  hell is very specific. I looked up"hell' in Wikipedia  and found a pretty good general explanation. Also searched  for "the origins of hell" and came across a lot of Christian apologist arguments.

This a  a huge topic in terms  of available information. I've provided a very basic idea, with  limited information. I've also given a couple of sources for more information. If you're interested, do some research and make up your own mind.

I would like to do some research, but finding out what a certain person believes is harder than doing research about religion.

Researching a certain person's beliefs is sort of a fucked up thing to do most of the time, anyway. I'm interested in what a person believes about economics, foreign policy, criminal justice, and that sort of thing when I'm thinking over whether or not to support them politically. But the rest of the time, obsessing over what a certain person believes is basically something that it is OK for the person to punch me in the face for doing. You are too interested in investigating people that you know for engaging in thought crimes according to your probably psychologically disturbed standards.

The things that a person believes effect those other things.  It's not exactly coincidental that certain political viewpoints dovetail with religious ones.It would be "thoughtcrime" if they only thought that shit, but they don't..they seek to act and set public policy based upon them. I understand why, and how, it's difficult for us to divorce our principles from our actions, but not impossible. Ultimately, that's one of the most compelling arguments for the restriction of religious nonsense. It's not even controversial. We allow people to believe whatever the hell they like. We restrict the actions those beliefs can legally support.

I would absolutely state that a person who punches you in the face is guilty of assault....but that doesn't mean that you don't have a punchable face, lol. It's one of those situations where you high five someone -while- sending them to jail.

Principles in politics @gae I thought I was the dreamer
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post
