We have weekday Torah readings on Mondays and Thursdays. Everything about it is ritualized. Someone has the honor of removing the Torah from the Ark. Someone has the honor of lifting the Torah up into the air so that everyone can see it. Someone has the honor of rolling the scroll back up. The honor of lifting the Torah into the air is called 'hagbah'. We give that honor to someone who is strong and steady and will not drop the scroll, because the consequences of dropping a Torah scroll are severe for everyone who witnesses it. So the honor was given to a guy one day who had never done hagbah before. He heaved the scroll up into the air, was surprised by its weight, and exclaimed, "Jesus Christ this thing is heavy!"
That is about the most outrageous thing that a person could do while performing hagbah. I am told that it was met with howls of laughter. The guy wasn't taken out and stoned or anything.
Laughter? How fantastic.
I've alway found Catholics rather laughable too. (until the recent catastrophic scandals)
To put it into better perspective, jesus is considered to be an idol in Judaism. One must never say an idol's name in a way that would make it seem that the idol is a deity. And one would never ever say that name while holding a Torah scroll. It's probably roughly equivalent with a Catholic priest standing at his pulpit with a bible in hand, and summoning satan. The incident that I related happened in an Orthodox shul where you wouldn't expect something like that could ever happen.

Yes. I even have people tell me that this expression proves I really believe in god deep down. I told them I don’t go that far down.

Ah...the old "It's like I don't even know you!" approach. YAASSS! Melodramatic, but classy.
I like it.
Okay, here goes...

I understood the context. However, wasn't aware of how Jesus is seen by orthodox Jewry.
Makes perfect sense ; Jesus' followers claimed he was the son of G-d and worshipped him. For that reason alone he was obviously not the Moshiach.. Mr understanding is that the Moshiach will be a warrior priest in the Davidic tradition , will not be divine, and will not die prematurely --That before you get anywhere near ushering in a period of world peace.
The most appropriate word I can think of to describe Christian claims that Jesus was the messiah is "chutzpah".

The real chutzpah is trying to get us to call him c-h-r-i-s-t, which is literally like trying to get us to acknowledge him as our king.
The classic description of chutzpah is a man who murders both of his parents and then tells the judge that he should be lenient with him because he is an orphan.

King? As in 'christ' = christos= ' anointed one' ?
You know, I had never thought of that. But then, Catholic religious education is a bit unusual. Although not not officially not allowed to read the bible, it was all but actively discouraged. I read both books when I was 16. That was because one of the brothers told me I really shouldn't. I soon understood why; some of the more fatuous claims made by Catholics (such as papal infallibility) don't seem to have quite the scriptural authority claimed.
Reading the bible raised a whole lot of big questions for me. My teachers would say:"That's a mystery of faith, we just believe" I would think that is the antithesis of Talmudic tradition.
Later my entire class was sent on "retreat'' with trained theologians. They gave me the company line. When I still had questions I was referred to Thomas Aquinas. ----and a fat lot of good he was; writing things like "You believe everything or nothing".

In all seriousness, I can't imagine caring that someone would make such a criticism.
It wouldn't warrant more than a raised eyebrow and middle finger, IMO.
Although, this could work too...
This as well..

Now that you mention it, I never have.

I've always liked the response "I say "oh my god" when something is unbelievable - like god".
