It makes me sad

It makes me sad
There is a YouTuber that does reaction videos to music he's never heard. The songs he listens to are classics, famous and popular in their time.

I love his reactions because you get to see someone hearing a fantastic piece of music for the first time as an adult. And this person is a musician who appreciates fine music.

What makes the entire scenario sad is that he was raised in a very religious household that shunned secular music, secular movies, secular tv shows, etc.

Only gospel music was allowed.

This is someone who grew up in the United States and had no idea who Johnny Cash was.

He had never heard the Righteous Brothers, Phil Collins, Pink Floyd, Diana Ross, Johnny Cash, the list goes on.

To see his face light up as these songs play is like watching someone who has been blind their whole life, see for the first time.

There are many beautiful and wonderful gospel songs and I say this as an atheist, but to deny someone music because it's not gospel almost seems criminal to me.

I'm glad he's now an adult living on his own and can decide for himself what music he wants to listen to.

It's one more reason why religion poisons everything it touches.

I would count myself lucky if I'd never heard of the Bee Gees. How did they get away with that rubbish for all those years? Singing through their noses. There should be a law against playing Bee Gees records in public.

I don't like gospel either.

One of the Bee Gees, I think it was Barry, once complained that the band's music didn't get the acclaim he thought it should.

Well, when you produce mindless shit that is twee and requires the intellect of a garden slug to appreciate, only people with the intellect of a garden slug who like mindless shit that is twee will appreciate it.  Unfortunately for the Bee Gees, these people are not the ones who hand out awards that have any real kudos.

In any case, the Bee Gees grew quite fat on the proceeds that emanated from their fuckwittery so I guess that they shouldn't complain too much.

One of the grandest things about art (music, painting, sculpture, whatever) is the ability it has to transcend religious boundaries.  Not only is it sad how often religion restricts access to great art, I find it deplorable that so many atheists don't give religious art a chance.
