Regardless of how you might feel about Ditka, he was one tough son of a bitch. Yet in an interview (sorry, no link) he said he would not allow a teenage son (if he had one) to play American football today. That struck me as one of the most major indictments against the sport in its current form. When that hard-ass motherfucker says he wouldn't allow a hypothetical teen son to play football today, you really should listen.
I didn't like the guy. I think he was a fucking prick. I think he was just in the right place at the right time with the 1985 Bears and that defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan deserves more credit for that team's success than Ditka. But I respected his toughness and I think his comments about how harmful the game is to its players speaks volumes.
