I never got into MTM, or Lou, the spin off. That was the 70s. 

But it makes sense. It paved the way for more female focused lead characters. 

An aside though. Nobody fucks with Betty White. Not that she needs the help.

I think you’ll find that Lucille Ball paved that particular way. And Donna Reed. And Cicely Tyson. And Marlo Thomas. And Diahann Carroll.

What do Rosa Parks and Susan B. Anthony have to do with this? I was pointing out that there were plenty of female leads in American television before Mary Tyler Moore.

Ed Asner had a substantial career prior to his Lou Grant character.

Yes I am slow on the uptake. I just stumbled across a video compilation retrospective of all the notable people who have died in 2021. One of them was Tawny Kitaen. Best known for her role  as the fiance the Tom Hanks character in  the 1980s movie "Bachelor Party".
