In her family's announcement of Dolly Parton's death, her nephew says that she is now "In the arms of Jesus."

It's a reminder that she was a committed Christian, whose religion was always an integral part of her life and work.

She made it clear in interviews that her support for all kinds of people was derived from the New Testament principle that we are not to pass judgment, that only God judges.

In another interview she said: "God is my co-writer and my co-pilot. Anything that I do, I always keep God first and foremost because I feel like that’s where I draw my strength…[Songwriting] is my God-time. I have a little world that I work in with God and leave myself open [to Him]. Some times are better than others, but I enjoy the process because God gave me my gift. We all have our gifts. Some of us don’t use them like we should. It’s like that Scripture in the Bible about hiding [your light] under a bushel basket. If you don’t let it shine, it’ll go out. So I feel like God gave me this gift, and I want to write, create, spread joy, and spread a message. And I want to be there for other people. I know God is there for me.”

Here is a recent song she wrote, in which she warns of the consequences of turning away from God's word:

I think this is relevant because some people who are less loving and more judgmental than she was have told me that no intelligent person can be a Christian, and that all Christians are hypocrites.

If more Christians were Dolly Parton-type Christian, I’d be less judgmental about Christianity.

Parton and a handful of others (Jimmy Carter springs to mind) were the exceptions, not the rule.

If May the Fourth is 'Star Wars Day', can we make September the Twenty-Fifth 'Dolly Parton Day'?

I’ve never been able to get through Rocky Horror, but when I was 12, my mother took me and my five brothers to London for the stage production of The Pirates of Penzance with Curry as The Pirate King. Made me a fan for life.
