How did men survive this?

RE: How did men survive this?
Another sphincter-clenching medical procedure: In the 19th century, a common treatment for syphilis was to insert a heated silver wire into the urethra and jiggle it about until the pus stopped flowing.

Surprisingly, it didn't work.

The early cure for syphilis was reminescent to chemo therapy - using levels of arsenic that killed off the syphilis while not quite killing the patient.

It's like Mad Men, only it's a medical drama set in 1900, and it actually showcases graphic medical procedures that may or may not be crude versions of procedures in common practice today. Or graphic medical procedures that thankfully aren't in common practice. And the use of cocaine and heroin as anesthesia.

Well....I have watched the first two episodes.  I am glad that I grew up with a veterinarian for a father.  I have seen him do some pretty nasty things and have been wrist deep in the abdomens of a few dogs while assisting with spays.  Our dinner table talk was not recommended for the squeamish.  Going to work with dad meant be ready for anything and don't wear your school clothes.

So far, I am liking it quite well and am going to proceed with another episode or two tonight.

Thanks again for the suggestion.  I doubt I would have stumbled upon it any other way.
