A replica needs a genuine article to replicate.   Otherwise it is a prop.

According to the OED, a Replica is "An exact copy or model of something, especially one on a smaller scale." In this case, it would be a model, not a copy, but still falling under the definition of a replica as provided by the most authoritative dictionary of the English language out there.

And, of course, any dictionary worth its salt would account for both casual and formal usage, which is why it covers both "Exact copy" and "model."
