How can you be sure that God doesn't exist?
#41
RE: How can you be sure that God doesn't exist?
I will assert that a god is made of invisible, intangible pudding.

What kind of pudding you may ask ?

I believe a god is made of tapioca pudding.
No other kind of pudding would make any rational sense at all. It must be tapioca.

But really the real question is, how am able to tack on anything at all to the end of invisible & intangible ?

I can only do it through imagination.

Most anytime you try to describe something as having these two properties, there is nothing more you can say about something you can't see, nor touch, nor measure in any kind of material fashion.

Anything else you say about it will come from your imagination.

1. Quite simply, there is no evidence for god's existence.
2. I can be as certain of god's non-existence as I can for the non-existence of anything that merely has a place in mythology.

Anti-theist.

I can't be. Which is why after 3 years of traveling the globe and taking a journey to its center I came upon the one true god.

I feel very fortunate I found the right faith, Can't say the same for you op.

Also welcome, Shalom

It all depends on how you define it. I'd call myself an agnostic atheist. Atheist because I don't believe in any gods, but agnostic because I know it's not provable.

It's mostly splitting hairs. No one can agree if "atheist" means "doesn't believe in any gods" or "believes there are no gods".

Well, I can't, but I don't see that as being a meaningful issue. There are literally an infinite number of things that could exist and have yet to be disproven.

What if I posit a god named Steve who punishes faith and rewards skepticism. You could ask me for evidence of my claim, and I'd just keep defining Steve in such a way that he cannot be disproven. You could say "why do I care about this nonfalsifiable entity?" and I could respond "But what if you're wrong?"

My point is that there are no shortage of things that might be real or might not be, and I need not waste any time proving they're not real before I can just comfortably live my life as thought they're not real, pending evidence from people making the claims.

RE: How can you be sure that God doesn't exist?
The Christian God is defined by mainstream Christianity as being all-knowing, all-loving, all-powerful, and all just. Yet even a cursory reading of the bible reveals a God who is cruel, unjust, tyrannical, unloving and eternally vengeful. Ergo, the Christian God does not exist by reason of self-contradiction.

An all-loving, all-powerful, all-knowing God, by definition, cannot create evil or permit evil to exist in the world. And yet, evil exists. Ergo, God, as he is defined, does not exist on the grounds of self-contradiction.

The law of conservation of matter and energy states that the total quantity of energy in the universe remains the same. Matter and energy are interchangeable, but neither can be created or destroyed. Ergo, the universe has always existed and will always exist in one form or another. God is unnecessary by the Principle of Parsimony.

The natural histories of religions are well-documented. The behavioral causes of religions are well-known. There is no evidence that gods and religions are the products of anything other than human ingenuity and imagination. Ergo, atheism is rational and skeptically unassailable.

If I may be so bold to quote myself.

For those that say a god is invisible & intangible, how did you determine that this god has these attributes ?

Yep, the OP a shit and run theist.

Only one post so far and, no responses to any of our posts. Could it be a sock stirring things up?

I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt, and think that they have been mulling over some of our points, and reevaluating their initial position, but I am not sure I have that much confidence in theists any more after spending years discussing these things with them.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
