I suspect the US government's saber-rattling with other nations might have factored into our score.
Looking at it, it's divided into three domains and it confirms my suspicion:
- Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict: Americans do worse than any Latin American nation except Colombia and Mexico. Hell, Mexico's score is actually lower than North Korea's.
- Societal Safety and Security (this might be the major factor that dictates why they immigrate to America) : the only Latin American nations who do better than us are Costa Rica and Uruguay. Seven Latin American nations have a score over three, including Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, four of the nations best situated to sneak across the border (for completeness, the other three are Colombia, Venezuela, and Brazil). Of those seven, only Guatemala does better than North Korea.
- Militarisation: Russia and Israel are the only countries ON THE PLANET who do worse than America in this regard. Yes, including North Korea.
Full report available here. Charts covering the domain-by-domain breakdown on pages 98-100.
So, yeah, there's actually a really good reason that we're weighted so low on the list.

Looking more at the interactive map (click "Specify Indicator" on the map on that homepage), there are actually a lot of other factors that are factored into it (23, to be precise), and, of course, there's still a lot of places where America does better than most Latin American nations, but there are a few where there's a HUGE disparity, like Incarceration, military expenditure, nuclear and heavy weapons, weapons exports, external conflicts fought, deaths from external conflicts, and terrorism impact. Bolded ones, we've got a perfect five for unpeacefulness. The other 16 factors are either much better than or on par with Latin America.
In fairness, there's seven factors where we get a dark blue score (bolded ones are perfect ones): Political Instability, Weapons Imports, Deaths from Internal Conflict, Internal Conflicts Fought, Armed Services Personnel, UN Peacekeeping Funding, Displaced People.
Once again, this might explain why America has a lower overall ranking. Also, I notice that when Online Biker gave his list of Latin American nations with a higher score than America, he left out Mexico, the nation which gives us the highest percentage of our immigrants. Could it be because their ranking is actually lower than that of the US? Specifically 140 to America's 128? And could that blow an even bigger hole in his argument than all the minutiae I dug up about just how it's calculated?

But wow, the USA is ranked 128th? That's like bottom half of the world isn't it? Is that still above the "shithole" threshold? Asking for a friend.
Never expected a "USA Sucks" kinda thread from OLB. Life is full of surprises I guess.
Edit: Got the link to work. Read through things. Rough conclusion: USA sucks. Still surprised OLB started it all.
Read his post carefully. He is not dissing the US. He is trying to justify his xenophobia with silly reasons.

Without making anything up - show where I say ANYTHING that says I am against immigration.
You can't - because I am not.
The POINT of my post is obvious -
The crisis in the border is caused by immigrants.claiming asylum - when in fact the majority come here for economic reasons.
I have never met someone from Central or South America who came here for asylum. I have met, and know many who came here for a paycheck.
We need to change the laws to make it easier for those who wish to come here to work.

I'll keep typing facts and exposing you
You'll keep dodging ducking and cowering in your hole of lies
Yes that makes me very happy . I imagine your joy though is the joy of a coward the relief of hiding.

Bold mine and quod erat demonstrandum. You are afraid they might take your job. Well, boy, Portugal had invasions of immigrants in my life time, like eastern people and african people and brazilians that dislike portugal because they were once a colony. They come, few stay, the others run away. Simple. And we don't have to fire a shot.
It seems to me you are afraid that someone might take your job. I essence you are afraid they might be better than you. I can't speak for all europe but here, if you want to stay here, you better prove your worth or you will be politely asked to leave by the cops.
You should better ask what is wrong... with yourself. Can you pass a psych test to own guns for hunting?

You are being a digital idiot.

That's a laugh. (Long retired)
We don't have to pass such tests to own guns.
But I did pass an FBI background test for a Top Secret security clearance. I also passed a state background test for a concealed carry permit.
I have carried daily for 18 + years, and have never had any legal problems. (Last traffic ticket - 36 mph in a 35 mph zone - 25 years ago)
Exactly what makes you question my gun ownership?
Ahh.. I own guns...
Yeah - that's pretty suspicious

Costa Rica is great! Of course if you're in Honduras and want to walk there, you have to go through Nicaragua....
