Maher/Corden and obesity

@LadyForCamus

To be fair, the new MyPlate isn't that different.

https://www.choosemyplate.gov/start-simple-myplate

They still suggest avoiding fats, sugars and sodium.

I agree with the sugar part, but I'm not so convinced that fats and sodium are that much of a problem if you're working out and drinking plenty of water. Like I said, there are varying views on the topic, though.

I am 6'3", about 220. Technically, I could be considered overweight, but I don't have much body fat, and I'm fit. Not as cut up as I'd like to be but I think I look and feel pretty good. I eat plenty of fats and sodium. Obviously, the supposed risk with sodium is cholesterol and heart problems, so maybe down the line I'll see those effects.

However, I have plenty of buddies who are very serious into weight lifting, body building and various sports, and quite a few of them are on the ketogenic diet, which rejects the idea that fats are bad for you. I don't know, it's only anecdotal. But when I see super healthy, good looking people around me who are active and fit, and they eat tons of fats along with high amounts of protein and fiber rich veggies, I have to wonder how right the conventional methods of nutrition and dieting are.

As a dietitian, I’m always amazed by how untethered discussions of weight management are to the scientifically relevant data that should be driving them.

Except that it doesn’t recommend avoiding all fats; it recommends consuming less saturated fat and more unsaturated fats. In fact, the new nutrition fact label has done away with “percent of calories from fat” because the research bears out that the type of fat is more important to human health than the amount.

Okay, I do see that. Isn't that what the pyramid recommended as well, or did it not specify between different types of fats? I can remember when I lost weight, I pretty much only focused on calories in/calories out and exercising, of course. I honestly never paid any attention to how much sugar, carbs, protein or fat I was consuming. So I'm certainly no expert, I can only comment on what my diet was then versus now, and what I see people around me doing.

What do you think is the main difference between the pyramid and the plate?

Not to mention our own government is infiltrated by corporate interests who somehow convinced the FDA and an entire fucking nation that white bread is healthier than vegetables.

Um, yeah. We don’t do the pyramid anymore. Not for years now.

I'm aware. We did, though, which is my point. It's what I learned growing up, and it's what a lot of people still think to be true because they were taught it.

I never knew that. What if you had a stressful, heavy duty job and needed to gain weight? Asking for a friend Tongue

Some of the key differences between the plate and the pyramid are that the pyramid didn’t differentiate between healthy and less healthy choices within food groups, i.e. sat versus unsat. fats, fish versus sausage, low fat versus full fat dairy, that kind of thing. The nice thing about the plate is that it’s an actual plate. The average American doesn’t know what constitutes X number of servings of a food group, but they can understand, “make half of your plate fruits and vegetables.” It’s just a more accessible visual.

In my professional experience, most obese individuals today don’t come close to meeting even what the outdated pyramid from 30 years ago recommends, lol. It’s a total strawman.

Bill Maher is another guy who makes atheists look bad. Let's be honest, between him and Richard Dawkins, it's no wonder most people think we're all pompous, rude, and complete assholes.

Fat shaming is nothing more than bullying. What Maher is trying to argue here is: It's okay to bully people if they are obese.
The whole tone of Church teaching in regard to woman is, to the last degree, contemptuous and degrading. - Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Not really. He explicitly said otherwise.
