Supreme Court Considers Mandatory Govt Funding of Religious Education

This could be a step in the wrong direction.

What kind of precedent will this set for the rest of the States?

The voucher program was a mistake from the very start.

Well, at face value, it could seem like a good thing to people.

Quote:In other words, if a taxpayer owes the state, say, $100 in taxes, she can decide instead to send that money directly to an SSO [Student Scholarship Organization]...

Sounds good, right? I mean, if you didn't look any further into the matter, it sounds like a great thing... using money you owe the government and instead of paying the government, deciding to redirect that money to help kids get educated? Awesome!

Except...

Quote:The only SSO operating in the state supports 13 private schools, 12 of which are religiously affiliated, and over 94 percent of program scholarships have gone to finance religious education.

So, fortunately, for now, the Montana Supreme Court shut down the program.

Quote:Recognizing the clear conflict with the state’s no-aid provision, the Montana Supreme Court struck down the entire program, abolishing tax-credit funding for all private schools in the state, whether religious or not.

However, a reading of the article from the SCOTUS blog shows that the matter isn't over, and that, in the past, the Supreme Court has called for funding for schools based on the idea that they were being discriminated against and therefore should receive the funding they needed.

Hopefully, they make the right decision. I don't see why religious schools should be funded by the government any more so than secular schools.

The SSO gives special funding status to private schools (religious or not) which is not the purpose of taxpayer funds.

I don't disagree.

I thought church schools were supposed to be private. As in, not funded by the government.

Yeah, you'd think that would be the case. Apparently we don't give a flying fuck about separation of church and state anymore.

Nope. Christians have been trying to tear it down and erase it since the very beginning, most likely.

Luckily, the fight isn't over yet!
