OR an extremely tough race of humans will survive and go about starting again.

To be accurate, Ms. Thunberg's concern isn't so much what's happened in the past hundred years as it is the fact that governments are doing precious little to address the problem.

Sort of like being in a leaky boat with the water up to your chin and the crew, instead of fixing the leak, lectures you on how much ships have contributed to commerce.

To be accurate, I am not talking about ms. Thunberg.

Also to be accurate, while the boat of productive technological industrial society might be leaking, if we use leak as metaphor for environmental degradation, the water is not quite up to your chin nor is the boat truly in danger of imminently sinking, at least not directly due to the leak.   Encouraging people to jump overboard instead of repairing the leak by telling how wicked the boat had been all along does not in fact improve your chances of survival.

If you jump overboard, there is no other rescue boat coming, nor are you close to the shore.

Correct. I have no party affiliation.

You seem to believe that there are two types of people - ( R )s and ( D )s.

Perhaps when you grow up, you will find life - and people - is and are more complicated than that.

This is also an exaggeration.

The climate crisis will directly cause huge dislocation, impoverishment and immiseration. but it is hard to see how it will directly lead to collapse of civilization, much less our extinction.

If it becomes the indirect cause of the collapse of our civilization, then it would seem the likely path would through economic and demographic stress the climate crisis leading to rise of nationalism, collapse of mechanisms for collective problem solving, fragmentation of trade and security alliances, leading to armed conflicts between major power blocks.

If these symptoms are already manifest, then they become the most direct threat.  Until they are reversed efforts to address the more fundamental cause would likely be unavailing.

An analogy might be your boat has a slow leak.   The leak by itself will make you wet, soggy and uncomfortable, but won’t sink your boat in the near future.   However, the leak caused a short circuit and now your boat is on fire.   While the fire is burning, Do you focus more on putting out the fire or on stopping the leak?     You certainly won’t have much success in rally those in danger of being cooked to your cause of stopping the leak now, even if you can make the sound case that everyone has an ultimate stake in stopping the leak and bailing out the boat.

The difference between Greta and many adults is not that greta sees the leak while adults don’t.   It is adults appreciates the threat of the fire more clearly than Greta appears to.

People seems particularly like to exhibit the complexity of pretending they are of neither opposing camp and are thereby better than either camp when their views in most ways much more closely resemble the more morally reprobate of the two camps.   Doing so allows them to indulge in sympathy for the worst and still pretend to be better than the best.

Gee --

How could I EVER doubt the authority of Greta's pronouncements? She's SOOOO totally qualified to tell us how bad we are.

After all - she's a kid - and she's famous for a stunt to make her famous. That's authority there!

Next up - Kim Kardashian will set nuclear power standards.......

Yeah, you must really be in tune with several decades of modern science to need to rely on the weight of her personal authority to assess whether she is mostly right.
