I've got a buddy in the UK that collects knives..and from what I understand, the laws are pretty restrictive. Are machetes not covered under the same?

Kinda-sorta, but not really.  Machetes are classed with swords, not knives.  Swords are illegal only if they have a curved blade and are more than 50cm long.  So, a machete with an 18" blade is perfectly legal.

Another one is 'zombie knives'.  The law defines them as having a cutting edge (which seems redundant) and images or words promoting violence.  So, if you have a sharp, fantasy-style knife with a skull and the words 'Death To Ewoks', you can remove the skull and the words and the knife is legal.

The UK passed these stupid fucking laws in a spasm of anxiety over knife attacks.  Laws passed in such a climate are bound to have loopholes and oversights.
