Search for Causes

It seems that this thread has devolved into repetition.  I stand by what I've said.  Thanks for the discussion and debate.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Well shhhhhhucks. I guess we'll never get to hear how crystal healing, astrology, voodoo and the chupacabra also demonstrate that god is at work in the universe.

Let's not downplay the Chupacabra, I saw a few of them on the X-Files once.

RE: Search for Causes
It seems to be a bit disingenuous to claim to 'search for causes' and almost immediately reject theistic naturalism out of hand.  This gives the impression that one is searching for a particular cause, and will accept no other. So, it isn't really a 'search' so much as it is an exercise in  confirmation bias.

He rejects the accurate categorization of his beliefs as he describes them here. More dissonant than disingenuous. Honestly, it's a shame. The future of christianity, if it's to have a future, is going to be in separating superstition from whatever amounts to an essential christian truth, capable of being explained unobjectionably within the framework that dominates all contemporary thought, believing or otherwise.

Oh, Satan is responsible for that whole chupacabra thing.

Here, I'll try again. I have noticed that, even though I posted this on several of your threads where you claim that a god revealed something to you, you have yet to respond:

How do you know it was actually a god revealing something to you?

Is everyone that sincerely claims that a god revealed something to them, relaying factual information (I'm not accusing them of lying, just mistaking)? Are there any percentage of people, who claim that a god revealed something to them, mistaking some other type if experience as that of a god's revelation?

If yes to the above, how do you know you are not one these people? What sort of tests did you run in order to eliminate other possibilities other than a god?

And how are those of us, who are skeptical that anyone is having gods reveal things to them, supposed to tell the difference between those of you who actually had a god reveal things to them, and those that sincerely believe a god revealed things to them, but were mistaking?

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

It seems he has no answer to that particular question. It seems he thought if he said, “come on guys, just believe me!”, that would work. When it didn’t, he took his ball and left.
