The mayor of the town where I live just had a news conference basically restating what he said a couple days ago. He did close more things like hair and nail salons and all elective medical and dental procedures are to be cancelled.

Poor guy said he would not run for reelection a couple months ago before all this started. He sighed tonight and said he couldn't believe he had to publicly prohibit the hoarding of toilet paper - poor guy probably wishes he would have just stepped down.

Dallas county (which is the next county over) issued a shelter in place order to take effect tomorrow night at midnight and last at least two weeks...at least that's as long as they have the authority and it's expected to be extended. The Commissioner speaking is urging the governor to shut down the whole state.

Since my part time job is at a plumbing company I guess I will be going to work tomorrow as plumbers are considered essential and they have to have support staff.

These are crazy times.

The more I read about it, the more confused I am about it. According to the CDC, the symptoms are a fever, cough, and shortness of breath, a triad that applies to a shitton of diseases. And given that the death rate is a little more than 2%, mostly older people, I’m finding it harder to understand what exactly the fuss is about. What exactly makes this different from other respiratory diseases that go around? Besides its apparently lasting longer, and having a known source of the outbreak? Is there something I’m missing?

It's important to remember that this strain of the virus appeared very recently; and it comes from a family of viruses whose illnesses could range from the common cold to SARS, or possibly worse. Up until recently it was hard to know what the lottery had in store for us. To know that the death rate is 2% you need 2% of people to have died in the past two or three months; and while that's happening the virus is still spreading.

In other words, only in retrospect can we ask what all the fuss was about; but as we're going through it, we are the statistics that determine what the percentages will be. So fuss helps people prepare and hopefully prevent.

The virus's official name is, afterall: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), as opposed to "SARS 1" which was called Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV).

I see that Covid-19 is getting that renaming. It's also orders of magnitude more virulent than SARS-1, which recorder 8000 infections and <800 deaths in '03. Or did I miss something?

What do you mean by "I see that Covid-19 is getting that renaming." - does not compute. As I learned from Boru earlier today, the disease is called Covid-19 (like AIDS) - but the actual virus is called SARS-CoV-2 (like HIV) as above.

Yes SARS 1 was far less virulent, due to any number of reasons (less air travel globally, less transport infrastructure in China in general or just a less infectious virus, for example). This is SARS 2 however - the REVENGE of SARS.
