I'm gonna need a lot of matches.

They are quite stalker-ish.  I haven't been in a Catholic church since I attended a cousin's wedding in 1987 but still I am counted as a member and get mail from my hometown church a few times a year.

You would think when they would have gotten the hint when I told them what I thought when they refused to baptize my oldest.  Apparently a big 'fuck you' doesn't count as leaving the flock.

If I may, why did you want to get your kid baptized if you were an atheist?..or was their refusal the reason you "saw the light" and told them to jog on to a far away place?

That was when I was about 20.  I was well on my way out after looking for 'the right' religion for me.  I never fully bought into it but thought it's what you do  - well over 90% of the people in the area where I lived were Catholic.  That event was the big push.

I imagine it'd be harder to break away when you're so totally surrounded like that, drowning, as it were, in a swamp of fundy gunk. Maybe there's a tipping point, where say if less than 50% of the locals are fundies then the remaining reasonable 40% can follow sharpish in a flood of atheistic awakening. Nice dream, at any rate. I was raised atheist/agnostic and my uncle sent me a paper on hydrothermal vents being the likely source of abiogenesis when I was, like, 15 years old so theism was always basically inaccessible to me lol.
